d s NORTHERN IRELAND BRIDGE UNION h c
MOLLY ANDREW
EditRegion6

I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Molly Andrew even though she had been ill for a number of years.  This brought back to me the many happy occasions when we played bridge together.  I greatly enjoyed playing bridge with her and had the privilege of seeing her winning a few competitions at first hand by being allowed to partner her.
I, of couse, requested permission from Ed who generously consented!

I also had the enjoyment of playing in many teams events with Molly and Ed particularly liking our McKinnon Cup matches along with the late Keith Singleton. These were usually played in Molly’s nice home in Massey Avenue followed by an excellent supper provided by Molly.  It also meant that I got to play a third of the boards with her.  Those were the good times.

Molly undoubtedly could play as well and better than most in any company.  She was rock solid in all departments of the game - bidding, play and particularly defence.  She wasn’t bothered by nerves and never seemed to be have a problem, everything was straightforward to her.  She made the game look very easy.  In the days before we all had the luxury of a nice print-out of the hands played in a session Molly could recall them all from memory, effortlessly.

When bridge was in full swing in Northern Ireland Molly and Ed carried all before them.  Indeed, referring to the master points database as I write this, I see that there are only 3 players with more national points than her - and it is about 8 years since she stopped playing.  This, I think, says it all.

Molly represented Northern Ireland in both the Camrose series and in the Lady Milne Trophy.  She is one of the few Northern Ireland ladies to have won the Lady Milne Trophy not just once but twice.

She is survived by her husband Ed and her two sons Paul and Lee.  She will be greatly missed.
